Class in SowetoIn his introductory chapter to Class in Soweto, lead author Peter Alexander explains that his team’s research was motivated by two main concerns: they looked at the impact of heightened inequality, seeing as South Africa is “the most unequal country in the world (with the exception of a few with small populations)”, and examined which classes are being politically mobilised in which ways.

Alexander points out that “there have been political differences between leaders of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the social movements, and there has sometimes been friction between employed workers and rebelling youth”.
